Prideinn Hotels, Resorts & Camps Partners With Lukenya Academy For Tree Planting Initiative

Lukenya Arboretum 3

PrideInn Plaza Hotel and Convention Centre has partnered with Lukenya Academy in Athi River to launch the “One Child, One Tree” initiative. This collaboration aims to promote environmental conservation through termly tree-planting, reinforcing the two brands commitment to sustainability.

Kenya has faced significant deforestation challenges over the past decades. Between 1990 and 2010, the country lost approximately 6.5% of its forest cover, equivalent to around 241,000 hectares. This decline has adversely affected biodiversity, water resources, and climate regulation. However, the National Forest Resources Assessment (NFRA) 2021 revealed that Kenya’s tree cover had increased to 12.13%, surpassing the 10% threshold, largely due to ongoing reforestation efforts.

The partnership was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as both institutions opened the Lukenya Sixth Form Arboretum. At the inaugural event, 150 trees were planted by students and PrideInn staff, with an aim of 300 trees this term. The initiative seeks to encourage sustainable practices among young learners while fostering a culture of environmental stewardship.

Speaking at the event, Shamim Mwangangi, HR Manager at PrideInn Plaza, highlighted the significance of such initiatives, “Through this partnership, we are not only contributing to reforestation but also educating future generations about their responsibility to protect the environment. This aligns with our commitment to sustainability and creating a greener future.”

The MoU was signed by Gloria Terer, Group PR Manager at PrideInn Hotels and Stephen Derwent Partington, Principal of Lukenya British Curriculum. It outlines plans to expand the arboretum and ensure continued student and faculty engagement in sustainability efforts.

Collins Kirui, Head of Sixth Form & Dean at Lukenya British Curriculum, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting its impact on environmental education, “The ‘One Child, One Tree’ initiative gives our students a unique opportunity to contribute to environmental conservation while inspiring their peers and families to do the same.”

This collaboration aligns with PrideInn’s CSR efforts, which focus on environmental conservation, health, and education. Moving forward, PrideInn and Lukenya Academy plan to replicate similar initiatives on key environmental dates and continue the program throughout the academic year.
